String Quartet #1 by Louis Chiapetta.

About Me

I was born in White Plains New York in 1989. I started my formal composition studies in 2003 with Gordon Minette at Mannes College of Music’s preparatory division. In my second year of study I became a member of the honors program for composition in the preparatory division, and received a scholarship. During two of my four years in the preparatory division at Mannes I was a member of the New York Youth Symphony’s “Making Score” program for young composers. This Fall I will be a freshman at Mannes College where I will be studying with Keith Fitch. I am currently working on two projects: a series of three “Image” for solo piano of which two are completed, and a chamber work for clarinet, cello, viola, and two percussionists.

Age: 18

About the Piece

My second string quartet was written when I was sixteen. The piece is the last work I produced in my earliest compositional style which was heavily influenced both harmonically and structurally by composers such as Bartok, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Berg. The two movement form I used for the work was inspired by Shostakovich’s twelfth string quartet, as was the use of both tonal material and material taken from the tone row employed in the work.
